BEFORE YOU FLY

Plan how you’ll get online in Japan

Research-based planning guide · Reviewed October 14, 2026

Before comparing prices, check what your phone supports and what you need your connection to do. A plan that works well for one traveller may not suit a group or a different device.

Questions to ask before buying

Device compatibilityDoes my exact device model support this service, and must it be unlocked?
ActivationWhen does validity start, and can I set it up before departure?
Plan featuresAre calls, texts and tethering included, or is it data-only?

Compare your practical options

Ask your current mobile provider for a roaming quote. Compare that with a compatible travel SIM or eSIM. If considering a portable Wi-Fi rental, check collection, return, charging and what happens when your group splits up.

Avoid assuming a data plan includes a Japanese telephone number. Check the specific product description if voice calls matter to you.

Keep a small offline backup

Save the hotel address, booking confirmations and your first route before departure. Keep activation instructions somewhere you can access without relying on the connection you are trying to set up.
