BEFORE YOU FLY
Prepare more than one way to pay
Plan a backup before you travel. Do not let one card, one phone or one payment app become the only way you can pay for your first journey.
Before departure
- Ask your bank about overseas use, withdrawal fees and any account restrictions.
- Know how to contact your card issuer while abroad.
- Keep a backup payment method separate from your main wallet when practical.
- Check how you will pay for your first transport and accommodation.
What about cash?
JNTO advises travellers to consider cash alongside cards. Rather than following a universal daily amount, estimate the payments you expect to make and decide how you will access more if needed.
Transport cards are a separate check
Before relying on a physical or mobile transport IC card, verify the current purchase, device and top-up requirements with its issuer. Do not assume every bank card or phone can complete the setup.
